Band Profile:

Circle of Reason

Written by Brittany Villegas

Circle of Reason is a band that defies the current state of the music industry, writing lyrics with true meaning and creating a sound that makes you tap your feet.

The unsigned band from Southampton, United Kingdom was formed in 2009 by Gary Slade, Simon Osman and Justin Young. All the new band members shared one dream: making a living spreading the energizing and inspirational thing we call music. Their sound can be simply categorized as Alternative Rock, but to many listeners it defies genres.

Slade, Osman and Young all met while working as teachers in a small music school. Shortly after they got together they recruited Jack Smith through a musician finder website. Slade and Osman both rock the stage on guitar, and while Osman is the main vocalist, Slade only occasionally sings. The bassist Smith is second in command when it comes to singing and drummer Young lends his vocals from time to time.

Slade has been playing guitar for about 15 years and was pretty much self taught with the exception of 20-minute lessons once a week for a year in school. Young had some drumming lessons while attending school but had already learned the basics before hand. Once Young finished school he continued learning on his own.

“Being in a band really makes you learn how to play,” he says.

Slade and Osman are the lyrical geniuses in the group, working in tandem to write the songs. The song writing process lasts anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple months. The band strives for an end result that is something a listener can turn up loud and feel a connection to. When one of their songs is in the process of being written, the actual "sound" tends to come before the lyrics. Once the desired "sound" is achieved, the lyrics tend to build on the overall feeling of the song.

Their song “Chasing the Sun,” which is available on iTunes, is whatever the listener wants it to be; practically anyone can find a different meaning in the lyrics. To most listeners, the song is about how one should never give up even when they feel like the last bit of hope is slipping quickly between their fingers.

Circle of Reason has created a secret world one can escape to when they feel like separating from reality for a few moments. This band is worth mentioning simply for their unconventional approach to music and deserves to make it big in the music industry some day.
