Word of Mouth

Countless times I’ve heard older people bitch and complain about “my generation.” Yet, I’ve always defended people my age from the wrath of the elderly and ‘old minded’. For the most part, I have faith in people and refuse to think that just because we are young, doesn’t mean we are apathetic and self centered.

Just the other day I picked up a newspaper at a local University and couldn’t believe what I was reading. One fourth of a page was dedicated to the ranting of a very passionate and infuriated writer who expressed his utter discontent regarding the University’s new soft drink carrier. On and on sentences flowed describing how unfair it was that the institution would no longer carry Coke and instead would only have Pepsi available for students. The reader was offended that the University had not taken into consideration the many loyal Coke drinkers before signing a contract with Pepsi. What?! Are you serious? Please tell me that an ‘educated’ 20-something college student did not sacrifice a tree to publish such a childish it-isn’t-fair-tantrum.

It is mind blowing to me that someone can be so insensitive when we have been bombarded with images of despair and hopelessness. I feel insulted and ashamed!

I’m sorry, but there are people in Haiti who’ve lost everything. EVERYTHING. They don’t even have drinking water and here is this writer bitching about having to drink Pepsi instead of Coke?! I don’t care if it was an opinion piece. It is mind blowing to me that someone can be so insensitive when we have been bombarded with images of despair and hopelessness. I feel insulted and ashamed! To all you out there…please restore my faith in today’s young people. Check out our helping Haiti piece and do your share to pitch in during this time of great need. It’s not every day that we get a chance to make such an immediate impact on someone’s life. So again—do your share, make a difference. Because the truth is there more important things in life than a debate over Coke or Pepsi.
