Band Profile:

Queen Dementia

By Leah S. Pritchett

Roaring guitars, impenetrable drum and bass, and energetic rhythms with an angelic voice best describes the Floridian metal band, Queen Dementia. What started as a musical side project eventually blossomed into romance between front woman, Alanna and guitarist Joseph Vilane.

“Joseph and I met in 2006. As friends, we began collaborating and creating music.” said Alanna. “Our relationship grew; we searched for band members as we developed as musical partners. In 2008, Joseph and I were married. Eventually, we found our permanent drummer when he answered our advertisement on Craigslist and we knew he was a keeper.”

Though things did not work with their bassist Alanna took over the duties on bass of the newly formed trio.

As a teenager Alanna sang show tunes throughout high school. She thought her wholesome voice would lend itself to whatever came her way, but she never imagined admiring heavy rock bands like Tool and Megadeth. It wasn’t until Alanna met Joseph that she decided to experiment with metal.

Not only are Alanna’s vocals flawless but her fashion sense is amazingly outrageous. From cyberpunk to industrial, Alanna also loves to incorporate her own individuality. She finds herself putting outfits together not to shock her fans but to leave a lasting impression.

Alanna doesn’t allow her femininity to overshadow the talents of the band. Even though metal is mostly a male-dominated genre she finds herself squashing the stereotypes and becoming, in my opinion, one of the finest front woman I have ever heard.

“We still live in a male-dominated world in many ways,” Alanna said. “I personally enjoy a good challenge. I do believe that there is still more to overcome as a female in metal, mostly due to the gender stereotypes that women are associated with in our culture. But the bottom line is that if you are a bad-ass, responsible front person, you will gain the respect that you deserve. We can't please everyone all of the time.”

Queen Dementia, as every other band, dreams to play Madison Square Garden—and after listening to them a countless amount of times, there is no doubt in my mind that their dream will become a reality. So scoot on over Evanescence, you’ve got nothing on Queen Dementia.
