Review and Photos by Cali Sanford

Six hardcore rock bands took the stage Saturday night at The Talent Farm, a small venue in Pembroke Pines. The show began with Mean Disease, who wowed the crowd with songs from their 2009 demo CD. Their vocalist, Shane Vogel, had an incredible amount of energy, and not just during their set! After their show, Vogel joined the mosh pit with a huge smile on his face. Keep an eye on Mean Disease, as they will surely gain a large following.

Everyone in the crowd knew that Mean Disease would be hard to follow, but One to Blame surely stepped up to the plate. They brought many fans, and the crowd went wild when they belted out lyrics about rebelling against conformity. The four men were clad in animal masks, and the lead singer, Jared Warsh, wore a “Grandpa Rules” shirt. This, combined with beach balls flying through the crowd, made for an eccentric set.

Joe Musten - Advent

Young and in the Way burst onto the stage with so much energy that the crowd was entirely focused on the tattooed Kable Lyall’s voice and Rick Contes’ superb guitar-playing. The mosh pit got huge with fists flying, and it all made for an amazing visual. After playing in Florida, the band is heading back up to their home state, North Carolina, for more shows. Advent hit the stage next to promote their upcoming album, Naked and Cold. Although they spoke about their band as if they were completely unknown, Advent has performed with a very familiar group, Rise Against. Matt Harrison, one of Advent’s two guitarists, had a great personality on stage and gave the crowd what they desired: heavy, melodic tunes. The band seemed to be in good spirits and had a great time. Their happy mood rubbed off on the crowd.

Thick as Blood played last... the speakers were pumping, and as the members came on stage, cheers and screams erupted for them.

Xavier Vicuna - Forty Winters

Forty Winters soon emerged on stage, and by the cheers and hollers of the crowd, it was clear that everyone had been looking forward to seeing them perform. They started playing a few songs from The Honor Campaign, their first album. They encouraged the crowd to get up and join the ever-growing mosh; at this point, the music was pumping throughout the entire venue. The lead singer Xavier, had great stage presence, and I particularly enjoyed Macho Roman’s bass playing. Their album Reflection is coming soon, so check it out. If you missed this show, they’ll be playing again at The Talent Farm in July.

And finally, the moment we had all been waiting for came: Thick as Blood played last, and honestly, I had never seen such an excited crowd. The speakers were leveled up a notch, and as the members came on stage, cheers and screams erupted for them. Gino Vento, the lead vocalist connected with the crowd with such power, you’d think he was a god. Their lyrics were angry and oddly empowering to the still-moshing crowd below them. They played songs off their albums Embrace and Moment of Truth. Truly, my only complaint is that they didn’t play longer. Thick as Blood will continue to tour in Japan and in the UK.

Gabe Cairo and Shane Vogel - Mean Disease

By the end of the night, I was satisfied with all the performances. The bands poured their hearts into the music, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a great opportunity for the bands to show the crowd their great personalities and skills, and maybe gain a few followers. I am so glad I didn’t miss such an amazing show!
