Review and Photos by Liana Minassian
Courtney Love’s reputation precedes her as the most controversial woman in the history of rock, according to Rolling Stone Magazine. From her marriage to and the mysterious suicide of Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain (which she has been blamed for), to flashing her breasts on the David Letterman show amid rumors of her drug abuse escalating, Love’s career has been all but boring to say the least. After her solo album, America’s Sweetheart, flopped in 2004, Love decided to recreate her band Hole with a brand new lineup including Micko Larkin of former British punk act, Larrikin Love. In support of their new album Nobody's Daughter, Hole has embarked on an international tour with wild rockers Foxy Shazam, stopping in Miami Beach at the Fillmore.

Before I made the journey to the photo pit to snap some shots of openers Foxy Shazam, a friendly male audience member sporting a Mohawk told me that during live shows, at smaller venues, singer Eric Sean Nally has been known to swing from the ceiling where exposed pipes act as his monkey bars. Unfortunately, the Fillmore is a theatrical style stage with its pipe system hidden away, but Nally still made it his job to fling himself and his microphone all over the stage. A near miss with two photographers’ heads made me fear for my eyeballs and the general safety of my face. Luckily I made it out okay while still managing to enjoy the first three songs and watching trumpet player Alex Nauth dance his skin tight pants off.
With a cigarette in one hand and her guitar in the other, Courtney Love opened the show with a cover of The Rolling Stones' “Sympathy for the Devil.”

Hole didn’t emerge from the wings until almost 10:30 p.m. making Love’s admirers squirm with anticipation. With a cigarette in one hand and her guitar in the other, she opened the show with a cover of The Rolling Stones' “Sympathy for the Devil.” While Hole’s shows have been known for being a sloppy train wreck, this show was relatively tame and without incident. They transitioned into Nobody’s Daughter’s first single “Skinny Little Bitch,” which many girls dressed in Love’s signature ‘kinderwhore’ style seemed to identify with. To my delight Love felt like reliving her Pretty On the Inside days and played “Miss World” and “Violet” back to back. While it wasn’t the most exciting show I’ve ever been to, it was fun to get back to my alternative roots for a couple of hours and see Ms. Courtney Love in all her infamous glory.
