50 Cent

June 15, 2010
The Fillmore, Miami Beach, FL

Review and Photos by Joseph Martinez

I arrived at The Fillmore two hours before the show, and there was already a long line of fans waiting outside the venue! The bus stop across the street on Washington Ave was packed with so many people that every several minutes the line at The Fillmore grew longer. Groups of fans even chanted lyrics to 50 Cent's songs, rapping to each other and creating an exciting environment.

The scenery inside the venue was breathtaking: Enormous chandeliers hung from the ceiling and speakers were placed throughout a gigantic area. I waited alongside 14 other photographers from different companies, who had traveled from as far as Denmark to photograph this show. At 8:30 p.m., we were all allowed to go up to the pit space, which was in front of the crowd and protected by guard rails. We walked along a tight space and came near 12 big boxes, held together by tape, where we all put our cameras down to rest while we awaited for the show to begin.

The lights dimmed at 9:15 p.m., and the huge white curtains covering the stage opened and became illuminated by a screen. The screen flickered as the moon faded into the shape of an eye, and then lit up in red, while 50 Cent’s face flashed, followed by a destroyed city with the shadow of a man in the center. The man held a large gun at the audience, and a red laser pointed at the screen, until the curtains dropped, and the real show began.

50 Cent traveled down a staircase, microphone in hand, and opened the show singing, “Crack A Bottle.” Fans couldn’t contain themselves. They banged against the guard rail, with drinks in hand spilling on their peers, while the force of the music blew everyone away. It was then that I realized that the 12 big black boxes were not just boxes, but oversized bass speakers! They were so powerful; they literally shook every part of my body and hurt my ears once they turned on! But the fans loved every second. I stepped to the side and snapped away as rappers Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks came on at the end of “Crack a Bottle.”

50 Cent, Lloyd Banks

Every audience member was standing, jumping, and screaming as the three artists took over the stage and sang “Many Men” and ended with “Then Days Went By,” a song I had never heard before but catchy enough that I caught myself singing the chorus. The lights lit the entire venue, and the music stopped during the chorus while the fans all chanted, “Then days went by… Then days went by…”

My 20 minutes in the photographer pit went by too quickly, but I was glad to be a part of such an amazing show! 50 Cent, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks truly knew how to make an entrance, and I’m sure they’ll continue to make great music, showing their rap and hip-hop passion for many years to come.
