Alexx Calise
March 6, 2010
O Malley’s
Margate, FL
Review and Photos by Leah Pritchett
I made my way through the gated doors of O Malley's, taking in the smoke that clouded the bar and the ruthless yells of excitement from the oversized jocks playing beer pong. I waited at the bar impatiently for the rock star of the night, Alexx Calise. The Florida native made a rare appearance in her hometown (a last minute booking during her vacation stay).
After several Camel Lights and a few drinks, I noticed a blue light rising from the stage that was only a few inches away from me. And there sat Calise. Her dark hair fell against her waist as she strung her acoustic guitar and welcomed everyone to the bar. The crowd greeted her back with a huge round of applause as she began to play.
She ripped through songs such as “Good Enough” and some tunes from her side project, The Sound of Cancer, which includes her astounding drummer, Dennis Morehouse. You can’t deny the talent Calise exudes while on stage. Her voice can give you goose bumps for there is no comparison to any female artist out there. Her guitar playing was flawless, and it is probably safe to say the woman was born to play guitar. No wonder the beauty moved to Los Angeles, California to make a name for herself. “I just wasn’t happy in Florida. I moved to California with literally 200 bucks in my pocket,” Calise said.

The crowd and I applauded in excitement as she cracked jokes, took a Jager shot from a fan and sung about how she likes when things are done to her private “hay” down there. Calise, in just several years, has already accomplished way more than any other unsigned, female musician out there. She has lent her vocals to several commercials and is endorsed by several music gear and clothing manufacturers. She scored even bigger when she had her song “Morning Pill” featured on the CW’s hit show, One Tree Hill. The song is personally one of my favorites for it deeply touches anyone who has been hurt by love.

Raw, edgy and intoxicating barely describes the presence and talent of Calise. I have always been an avid believer that Florida produces the best musicians and Calise only justifies my declaration. Trust me when I say that Alexx Calise will only get bigger. Her talent, aggressive and empowering attitude will only take her further into the music business. Move over Avril Lavigne — your bow ties and black eyeshadow have nothing on Alexx Calise.
