Taking Back Sunday
with Black Tide and The All-American Rejects
December 6, 2009
The Fillmore, Miami Beach, FL
Review and Photos by Lauren Laufer
What do the words "Miami, glitter, silver anniversaries, and Twilight" have in common? Nothing you would think, but then you probably weren’t down in South Beach for the last day of Taking Back Sunday’s tour. And you sure missed out on an amazing show.
Openers for the night were Miami local boys, Black Tide. With a heavy metal sound that was very different than the other two bands, it was refreshing to see they were able to hop on the end of this tour. They put on an energetic performance, dragging the fans in with their guitar riffs and good looks. Between songs, fans would comment on the strong resemblance their drummer, Steven, has to the star Taylor Launter from Twilight. This made vocalist Gabe respond with, “What are you talking about? He’s not the guy from Twilight!” But the girls in the crowd just kept calling him “Taylor” for the night.
Next up was the always entertaining The All-American Rejects. Now leg brace free, front man Tyson Ritter put on a fun show. Opening with their hit "Move Along," the band moved through their usual set. Before singing their hit “Dirty Little Secret,” Tyson asked the girls to say "dirty," and when they didn’t do it to his liking, he told them how he wanted it done: “Not like you’re going to Susie’s house for a f**king tea party, but like you want to grab this 25-year-old man in front of you.” That seemed to get the response he was looking for and then some to say the least. With the rolling around on stage and playful moves, it was a usual great performance from The All-American Rejects.

Last up were the headliners of the night, Taking Back Sunday, and as their singer, Adam, stated, it was a special time: their happy 50th anniversary, since this was the 50th and last show of their tour. Opening with their old hit “Cute Without the E," they set a good tone for the night and showed how the set would go. During their song “You’re So Last Summer,” they had a little surprise guest come out and mess around on stage. It was Tyson Ritter dressed up as a mime, and he came out and started mimicking the guys as they played. They even added to their set list the song “Error: Operator.” It was nice to hear a song they usually don’t play, considering it was requested by a fan. And of course their song for the amazing city Miami was played, and only played down here; it had everyone jumping around and singing along. During their set, they talked about how happy they were to be ending here, saying that Miami was “a tough crowd to please” and how the city should be renamed to “Sex Town” because it seemed more fitting.
Overall the night was fun and full of good entertainment. I don’t think there was a boring moment at all. But how could anyone be upset when you’re celebrating the silver anniversary of such down-to-earth and talented rock stars?
