Journalism Day 2009

October 3, 2009
at Florida International University

Written by OUTLOUD

The OUTLOUD Street Team was out early on Oct. 3, armed with clipboards, pens and newspapers, ready to represent and recruit. Another year, another Journalism Day.

Every year, the Florida Scholastic Press Association and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University sponsor the media event for middle and high school students in Miami-Dade County.

Journalism Day Opening Session

The 37th Annual South Florida Journalism Day, held at FIU’s main campus, drew a crowd of nearly 300 participants. The event, titled “Tapping into the i Generation,” offered a series of seminars, workshops and even an on-the-spot news and literary magazine contest. Other sessions covered topics from InDesign to Interviewing to Entertainment Reporting.

From 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., wide-eyed students and their journalism advisors wandered through the Graham Center, checking out info booths and scoring as many freebies as their hands and pockets would allow.

The media-sponsored event encourages students to become involved in their schools’ journalism programs, shaping the newest generation of reporters.
