Back in September, on my 18th birthday, I walked into OUTLOUD for the first time for an interview. I was not looking forward to it at all. My school required that I complete an internship and I wasn’t crazy about any field of work at the time. I entered an office with green and yellow walls and wondered what I was getting myself into.

At first, the things I was expected to complete just seemed like tasks the staff made up to give me something to do. Over time, my responsibilities expanded and I got a wider view of what goes into making a newspaper. Things like labeling envelopes and stuffing them with issues and letters began to seem important. If a paper puts out an amazing issue and no one reads it, what’s the point?

Everyone had their own jobs that they had to do. The editors, writers and office staff would be stuck doing their same jobs for each issue. As an intern, I felt like I had the best deal. My jobs ranged from identifying artists in photos to writing and editing to even dabbling in film projects. I got to learn about the different areas of journalism and found out what I would be interested in when applying for a job in the future.

I’m glad that my school made me intern at OUTLOUD. It gave me room to learn how to act and work in a publication. I feel like the experience that I’ve gained over the year will help keep me out of embarrassing situations that will make me look unprofessional when I go to college and work in other publications.
