Lady Gaga

Revolution Live, Ft. Lauderdale
April 8, 2009

Review by Diana M. Galban

"My name is Lady Gaga, and this ... is my house," said Stefania "Lady Gaga" Germanotta on a stage-wide screen projection in front of the audience as they cheered. Lady Gaga herself stood inside a black crystal box in a mannequin pose before the screen onstage blew up in realistically projected flames.

Gaga, born and raised in New York City, got her name from the Queen song "Radio Gaga," for her grandiose and Freddy Mercury-like personality. Her futuristic, colorful style and upbeat, fun music are the result of a fictional orgy among pop culture's most influential personas, including Andy Warhol, Madonna, David Bowie, Queen and Grace Jones—artists who have all influenced her in every way.

The audience at Revolution was as flashy, fabulous, and fantasy-driven as Lady Gaga, giving the venue a South-Beach gay club/New York underground dance scene feel.

"Some people say Lady Gaga doesn’t exist," Gaga explained from behind the dark shades covering her eyes, "but I work so hard every day to make her live."

Critics of the upcoming pop singer often take shots at her style, claiming the shoulder pads, hoods and bare-legs signature look isn’t as original as we think. They’re half right; we’ve caught glimpses of this outer space glam pop before, but the pop show Britney Spears has put on, live snakes and all, doesn’t compare to the commitment Germanotta has made to her Gaga persona.

The opening acts tonight didn't add up to the original and eccentric headlining act. The opening band, and rightly named, sharp dressed men of White Tie Affair, covered a few Kanye West songs. And while the crowd sang along to the familiar tunes, some seemed to wonder why they wouldn't perform their own.

As backdrop lights and house booming beats filled the stage, Gaga reappeared in a bubble outfit — a nude colored body suit with dozens of plastic bubbles attached and covering her body — to sing an acoustic piano version of "Poker Face," as heard on The Cherrytree Sessions.

After a short banter about Florida’s sunshine, Gaga left the stage as another Andy Warhol- inspired video titled "The Face," played. This time Gaga didn't introduce herself by her stage name, but instead used the moniker "Candy Warhol." "Tell them your real name" said the somber voice in the video, as "Candy" responded: "I don’t understand," and Gaga stepped onto the rotating platform on the stage in her LCD-Gagavision glasses, which read: "POP. MUSIC."

The familiar beat of "Just Dance," (Gaga’s debut single and rise to mainstream fame) boomed loudly on the speakers as the last song of the set. "Your Disco Sticks are way bigger than mine," she commented holding up her lit "Disco Stick" to the boys in front of the stage.

They say it’s not over until the fab lady sings; an outfit change and a now slightly emptier venue later, Lady Gaga returned for an encore, performing "Boys Boys Boys" and the regular version of "Poker Face."

Tonight, we were in for a clear representation of the mainstream dance scene that follows the New York pop princess. For the transsexuals, middle-aged men, Gaga look-a-likes, and dancing fans in the packed, sold-out venue, Lady Gaga lit up their hearts like her Disco Stick, all without wearing any pants.
