Suénalo

Review and Photo by Gabriel Ferrer

The nine-headed monster named Suénalo is a musical extravaganza that can only be fully experienced during a live show. I had heard Suénalo’s CD before, but watching every single component of the band assemble each song was spectacular. It’s so hard for so many instruments to come together without just sounding like a lot of noise, but Suénalo does it masterfully.

Suénalo, which is Spanish for play it, does just that. They play Latin influenced music with a mixture of hip-hop, funk and baby-making potential. Emcee and vocalist Amin DeJesus fronts the band, but every instrument is allowed its moment to shine. One member, Chad Berstein, even plays conch shells in addition to his trombone.

With so many bands producing depressing music, it’s refreshing to hear a sound that makes you feel happy to be alive.

If I had to point out one thing I love about the local music scene, it’s that every band is passionate about what they do. They’re not necessarily in it for the fame or the money (most of these people have day jobs). Suénalo played with a passion unparallel to any band I’ve seen before. They hit the stage at Transit Lounge on Saturday night around midnight and played three different sets throughout the night that lasted until 4:30 a.m.

What I love about Suénalo is that they make feel-good music, which is almost a lost art. With so many bands producing depressing music, it’s refreshing to hear a sound that makes you feel happy to be alive.

With a busy February schedule coming up, Suénalo is a band that should be on everyone’s checklist. You can check them out at Art in the Park, Global Cuba Fest and Jazid on Miami Beach.
