KILLSWITCH ENGAGE
with Parkway Drive, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Every Time I Die
Jan. 14, 2008
The Fillmore Miami Beach
By Jamie Zabludowski
When I walked into the Fillmore Miami Beach, I was blasted with cold air and the sight of a wildly mixed crowd. Some metal heads, some punks, some "MySpace emo kids" and some kids wearing Abercrombie. Just by the look of the audience, I didn’t know what I was about to experience— and that was a good thing.
As the first band played, I settled on the side of the stage watching the crowd go nuts, and I found myself asking some of the kids, "What band is this?" Nobody seemed to have a clue or care. The band that had them captivated was Parkway Drive from Australia, who had an incredible stage presence. The crowd was now dancing with their hands in the air. Then the fans began screaming when the Dillinger Escape Plan banner dropped after Parkway Drive finished their set.

Dillinger is known for their incredible live performances, and I got chills as they opened their set with the first single off of their 2007 release of Ire Works. They made a point that night that they were back with a bang: The guys were jumping off the top monitors; the drum set lit up with every hit; singer, Greg Puciato threw amps around the stage and made sure every kid on the floor was screaming for more. As their set came to an end, the younger concertgoers in the crowd attempted to make their way to the front of the floor to watch the upcoming band take the stage.
Every Time I Die’s banner dropped, and a big fist with a middle finger appeared behind the drum set. Their set was weak compared to the energy that Dillinger brought, but their fans seemed to have been very satisfied. They finished their set as the clock neared 10:30, allowing Killswitch to take the stage. With their diehard fans awaiting them to play their top single, "A Bid Farewell," the energy of the crowd intensified. Fans threw up metal horns and screamed the lyrics to every song as their set continued on well past 11.
Although it was definitely a strange mix of bands, it was still an incredible night filled with different types of people packed into one venue. Everybody surely left on an adrenaline rush.
