Street Drum Corps beat their way through Warped

By Giselle Portuondo

Street Drum Corps is no stranger to the chaotic environment of the summer’s most anticipated event, Vans Warped Tour. This marks the third time the group has joined the tour and hit South Florida with their unique style and peculiar collection of instruments, which includes hand drums, acoustic drum kits, buckets, kitchenware, recycled aluminum garbage cans, marching band equipment, electronics and a Moog Theremin.

I got the chance to sit with Frank Zummo and Adam Alt from Street Drums Corps to chat about their experience in this year’s Warped Tour.

“It feels like just getting out of a sauna,” Alt said when I asked him how he felt after the show and performing here in South Florida

“We play in Miami a lot,” Zummo said. “We did Taste of Chaos here, Deftones, 30 Seconds to Mars, and I used to play in South Beach with an electronic band I was in for the Winter Music Conference back in ‘99.”

I asked them how their music is different from anything else going on in this year’s Warped Tour.

“I think everything we are doing now is completely different than anything any of us has ever done before,” Alt said. “What we do is destroy buckets, garbage cans, pots and all sorts of crazy stuff. Now we have electronics and a lot of things get lit on fire by sparks.” He added jokingly, “Our tent might just go down!”

Not a far shot from the truth, as later that day after Street Drums Corps began their set the tent did go down, but not because of a crazy fire or sparks, but thanks to the huge storm that was approaching. They had to cancel the performance due to the weather, which was a real bummer since I was anxiously awaiting their performance all day.

The band said they want Warped Tour to begin including more bands like Street Drums in their lineup.

“I hope we inspire more street performers to come out, and if they have a special talent to get yourself out there,” Zummo said. “And if you need help, call the Street Drum Corps.”

The guys shared their thoughts about Warped Tour’s going green by using eco-friendly plates and power sources, and how they themselves are big in the recycling world by using recycled materials for their shows. They added that they were very proud to have performed during Live Earth 2007.

The Street Drums Corps will have their hands full for the rest of the year, with a new record titled We Are Machines being released sometime in September. They will hit the road in the winter with Aiden, and will be back with old friends, The Used in the Spring.
