Lady Sovereign Live
Studio B
November 28th Miami, FL
By Kellye Lopez
In the midst of her first American tour, Lady Sovereign found the time to grace Miami with her presence. Legions of fans filed into the downtown nightclub Studio A to see her perform. The two opening bands, Mayday and Young Love, entertained the crowd waiting to see Lady Sovereign, who did not make her premiere on stage until close to midnight.
Everyone received a warm middle finger welcome as the hip-hop British badass opened her show with the song “Ch-Ching” off of her album Vertically Challenged. Lady Sovereign has gained quite a reputation for her in-your-face, harsh lyrics and rhymes, but even harsher than her lyrics was listening to Lady Sovereign’s voice live. It’s not that she was incapable of singing up to par with her album, but her voice sounded raspy and cracked during certain times in performance. Her unapologetic explanation was that she recently recuperated from bronchitis. But luckily for fans, her raspy voice did not hamper the show.
Dressed in her signature tomboy look, Lady Sovereign would have probably been IDed at the front door of the club had she not been performing. Although she is actually 20, Lady Sovereign looks no older than a 12-year-old in baggy jeans and a striped tie.

Even her stage presence at times seemed a bit immature. Lady Sovereign has a knack for entertaining the crowd during a song, but it’s apparent that she is a fairly new performer. Her skills of transitioning between songs were awkward and her interaction with the crowd seemed irregular. She constantly put on a “puppy dog” face for some reason or another in between songs, which was quite a personality change from her usual don’t-mess-with-me attitude.
Most of the songs performed on the set were off her most recent album Public Warning, including the very popular hits “9 to 5” and “Love Me or Hate Me.” She also covered a song by the punks of her homeland, The Sex Pistols.
Although the self-proclaimed “biggest midget in the game” can definitely talk the talk, she has quite a bit more work to go until she can live up to her name. “Lady” is not the first word that comes to mind when watching Lady Sovereign perform. Her attempts to woo the crowd included spitting phlegm on stage, chugging beer and belching. These unlady-like manners would have absolutely repulsed any cotillion teacher; however, it seemed to win over the hearts of many fans.
