The waitress left my family for last. She seated everyone before us, and ignored my mother’s request for a glass of water while we waited. This blatant disregard for us was due to a single fact: we were the only Hispanic family waiting in a Las Vegas restaurant. Hate crimes are lurking. They live in the narrowed eyes of those sizing up a gay couple at the beach; the phrase "stupid faggots" fired at their joined hands. They live in the indifference of the waitress.
