![]() ![]() By Alex Toledo Appalled by my ignorance, a friend took it upon himself to introduce me to the legendary Pixies a few months ago. And so beginning from the beginning I became acquainted with the godfathers of alternative music; from Come On Pilgrim to Surfer Rosa to Doolittle onto Bossanova and their final release, 91's Trompe le Monde. Listening to them now it's difficult to believe anything so innovative and progressive was released in the twilight of the 80's hair bands. So, when my afore mentioned friend informed me that The Pixies were reuniting for the first time in over a decade I nearly fainted out of sheer excitement. The concert was held at Mizner Park in Boca Raton, although the amphitheater is part of what seems to be a glorified mini mall, the venue is in fact, quite pleasant. Following in the tradition of mundane, watered down rock, the opening band, The Thrills, were anything but thrilling. Anxious and impatient the crowd waited for the real show to begin. The Pixies stormed the stage in what seemed like an instant. No small talk, just music, and what glorious music. From the haunting melodies to the gritty guitar the live show added a dimension to the music only understood after being seen and felt. The audience chanted every line, every chorus in a collective state of synchronized euphoria. They played classics like Here Comes Your Man, Where Is My Mind?, Vamos, Debaser, Gouge Away, Isla De Encanta, the list spanning across all their albums. They closed out the relentless, non-stop show with an encore performance of Caribou. Wandering out of the amphitheater it was safe to say one left having felt a part of something very special, whether you had never heard them before that night, or you've loved them all along. All hail the return of The Pixies. www.PixiesMusic.com |
