KRYE

What exactly is Krye?

The band explains that Krye, pronounced "cry," is a human emotion.

Varying between alternative and metal, the year-old band describes themselves as a mixture of Disturbed, System of a Down and Godsmack. They are a four member group with John Michael (Mike) Dizon on vocals, Cesar Mendoza on guitar, Rodolfo (Rod) Miro on drums and Juan Jose Calderone on bass.

In July 2002 they began under the name Shattered Dreams and later on in that year changed it to Wreckweum (Requiem). By December 2002, the group recorded a three-song demo.

"It took off pretty fast," said Mike. "From July to August we made six songs."

Their journey began when Mike, recovering from a slump after being kicked out of his high-school band for unknown reasons, wanted to start up again. Around that time he met Rod during a local show at Kaffe Krystal. Rod, still playing drums with the band Insignia, introduced guitarist Cesar to Mike.

Cesar, former guitarist for Insignia, shared a similar fate as Mike when he was kicked out of the band. He and Mike ended up producing two songs after their first practice. Liking the chemistry between them, they went out in search of more members.

During his spare time, Rod decided to practice with Mike and Cesar, then soon left Insignia when a conflict arose.

"I'd rather play in this band where I can actually accelerate in music and play my own things and actually add more to the music than I could in the other band," said Rod.

Recruiting their bass player was probably the biggest challenge. It took until the end of February to find Juan, a guitarist from Mike's jazz band class, to fill that position.

"I really like the experience being in a rock band," said Juan. After Juan joined, the band changed its name again.

"I was thinking of one simple word that shows emotion," said Cesar. The band was named Krye from then on.

Several weeks later the band was on the go. Their first appearance was at BB's Sports Grill and Lounge in March and they've had several shows at the Hard Rock Café.

"The Hard Rock has treated us good so far," said Rod.

The band plays an average of three shows a month. They vary each show by adding a couple of songs to keep it fresh and interesting. But interesting things have also happened while they were performing on stage.

"I threw my shoe at [someone's] head by accident at a Miami Wing's show while trying to get it off my foot because it was loose," said Mike.

The band has really grown over a short period of time. They compiled close to twenty songs that just keep getting better and better.

"We play every show as if it is going to be our very last show," said Cesar.

Their music isn't the only thing that has grown. The bond among the band members has intensified.

"We're like family," the band said. "We'd do anything for each other."

Their next show is scheduled for September 27th at 6 p.m. at Miami Wings on 19145 South Dixie Highway. To find out more about the band and their upcoming shows, visit their website at http://www.krye.cjb.net.
