Movin'
Out
The
Broadway Musical
By: Jared Albert
"A
bottle of red, a bottle white..." Those words signaled the start
of a two-hour rock 'n' roll dance musical based on the music of Grammy
Award winning artist, Billy Joel.
The musical, Movin'
Out, follows a group of 1960's Long
Island teenagers and chronicles their experiences with love, war and
heartbreak In high school, Brenda and Eddie were the 'popular steadies'
and turned out to be the queen and the king of the prom. James and
Judy are 'forever sweethearts' ready for marriage. Tony looks for
love and finds it in former prom queen, Brenda, who has become independent
and split with Eddie after high school.
As war takes the men
away from home, the characters' lives are changed and renewed through
Joel's music. Movin' Out features 29 Joel songs including She's
Got a Way, Uptown Girl and many more classic pieces. The
Movin' Out band, led by Tony Award nominated Michael Cavanaugh,
serves as a supporting character as it overlooks the dancers via a
hydraulic lift, which freely moves across the stage. The performers,
who all have extensive training in theatre, convey the emotions of
Joel's lyrics through the art of dance.
Divided into two acts,
Movin' Out is a nonstop energetic exploration of the piano
man's euphoric lyrics and insightful music, which once again proves
that Joel has still 'got a way' about him.
