Scars of Life
A Journey to the Top

By: Holly Castillo

Local Florida metal band, Scars of Life, has not only taken an audience by storm and released two CDs, but has had the chance to play with such acts as Coal Chamber, Drowning Pool and Sevendust, all within the three years that they have been together.

The guys of SOL sat down with me, as they shared experiences and thoughts on music, life and the world around us. Kyle Shapiro, the vocalist, is accompanied onstage by Jason Rodman, on drums, Anthony Parrinello, on guitar, Joe Raio, also on guitar, and Mike Kennedy, on bass. A few years back, four of the five guys were actually in another local band; when they broke up they formed a project and, with one lineup change, they are now the kick ass band Scars of Life.

As a death metal band in the beginning of their career, they began to have different tastes and styles, and eventually grew out of it. "Instead of being in a labeled band, we do whatever the hell we want: heavy, slow, whatever sounds good," states Kyle. With lyrics that seem to relate to young adults of today, Kyle insists that he doesn't write for the sole purpose of inspiring others. "I experience what I put in my songs. I don't motivate people, and I don't try to solve people's problems with my lyrics."

From having been influenced by bands such as Slayer and Death, to Cold and Godsmack, even Fear Factory and Megadeath, the guys from SOL have obviously different tastes in music; which brings different opinions and sounds to the group, making them sound so unique.

So make sure you head over to www.scarsoflife.com, check out when they are playing at a venue near you, and pick up their CDs, because you will be hearing about them soon enough all over mainstream radio and TV. And just remember, they're from Florida, so they must kick ass.
