Summer at MoCA

By: Grace de la Aguilera

Summer is finally here. There is a Helen Frankenthaler painting on display at MoCA that reminds me of the summer: the way it is shockingly beautiful and thrilling one moment and then complacent the next. Each time I see Paradise Island, a massive canvas, splashed over with a deep turquoise-blue and swashes of blue and green about it--- my first thoughts are only of looking idly for long periods of time --- it is simply beautiful. But soon my only thoughts turn to leaving it, and moving on so that I may experience the same shock next time. Summer is the same way.

If you have still not heard about or attended one of MoCA's popular (and free) jazz nights, you should. The last Friday night of each month MoCA hosts a jazz concert in their plaza and opens their museum from 7pm-9pm. After enjoying the concert and strolling through MoCA you can check out the various galleries across the street--- where local and emerging artists' works are on display.

June is the last month to see Helen Frankenthaler and Trenton Doyle Hancock's exhibits --- two very different, but excellent exhibits that will be on display till June 8th ( I wish you would all come to see them before they close).

Later in the month, the Museum of Contemporary Art will be showing selections from its permanent collection. MoCA does not normally display its permanent collection of more than 350 artworks, but it will be showing selections beginning June 28 in an exhibit entitled "Imagine."
