Public Transportation just got better
The Metrorail, People-Mover, and 11 buses will now run 24 hours a day

By: Erin Keene

So, I met some of my friends at Automatic Slims on South Beach last weekend. We had a great time talking, dancing and having a few drinks. You know how it is: time flies by, the night is over, and everybody's tanked. Who's gonna be the one to drive home? Do we have $30 for a cab or did we spend our last $20 on a round of shots? Have no fear; the S-bus is here! The S-bus, which goes from South Beach to Downtown to Aventura Mall, is one of the 11 buses that will now run 24-hours and costs only $1.25 (60 cents for students).

Although the bus can be a little shady, it's not a bad idea to ride one when traveling in groups. You will avoid the parking costs and the time it takes to look for a spot, plus possible parking/driving tickets. You don't have to fight over whose car you're gonna squeeze into or whose gas money you're gonna spend, and you don't have to pick who gets to be the designated driver.

Work late nights at the hospital, a club or just a night crawler? As of June 8th, the Metrorail now operates 24-hours, and takes you from Kendall Drive to Hialeah. Plus, for any of you who live out west, they added a new stop at Palmetto (NW 74th & SR 826). The Metrorail also costs $1.25, but you can transfer from a bus (or vice versa) for 25 cents.

"In exchange for their support, the people deserve, and expect, better service. Our system and customer service must reflect the confidence that the voters have placed in us," says Roosevelt Bradley, director of the county's office of Public Transportation Management.

New public transportation services:

o Metrorail and Metromover's Inner Loop will run 24 hours.
o Metromover's Outer Loop will run until midnight.
o Bus routes L, S, 3, 11, 12, 27, 40, 54, 77, 88 and Busway Max will run for 24 hours.
o Metrorail's max. midday wait times will drop to 10 minutes from the current 15.
o Evening & weekend max. wait times will decrease to 15 minutes from the current 30.
